04.5 Pivot, top N and more
Spread values across the top, show running totals and changes, keep the top N, and find streaks.
Pivot: values across the top
Choose a column in Pivot column 1 (e.g. Month, or order status below). Each of its values becomes its own column 2, e.g. Jan · Sales, Feb · Sales…
- Format the date column as a month (Jun-2024) first, so you get one column per month, not per day.
- At most 500 pivot columns are drawn. If there are more, Analytics says so. Pivot by something coarser (month instead of day).
| # | What it is |
|---|---|
| 1 | Pivot column: its values become columns |
| 2 | One column per status, each with its total |
Show as: running totals and changes
Click a chip in Values and choose Show as:
| Show as | Gives |
|---|---|
| Value | The plain total |
| Running total | Adds up as you go down |
| Difference from previous | Change from the row above |
| % change from previous | Percentage change from the row above |
| % of group | Share of its group’s total |
These read the row above, so set a sort first. Analytics warns you if you haven’t.
Want the plain number and the running total? ⧉ Duplicate this column, then set Show as on the copy and give it a Name.
The Aggregate here applies to the pivot only. The plain table keeps its own.
Show: top or bottom N
The picture below shows the top 5 states by sales.
The Show strip: choose Top or Bottom 1, then:
- how many 2 (e.g. 10),
- What is ranked 3, e.g. Products overall or Products, in each Region,
- by which value,
- Show rank to add a # column.
| # | What it is |
|---|---|
| 1 | Show: All, Top or Bottom |
| 2 | How many |
| 3 | What is ranked, and by which value |
| 4 | The top 5 states |
A sentence underneath says exactly what will be shown, e.g. Top 10 products by Sales in each region.
Streak: N in a row
The Streak strip finds runs, e.g. sales below 1,000 for at least 3 months in a row. Pick a value column, a condition (>, <, =…), a number, and how many in a row. Not available while a Pivot column is set.
